If a referrer specifically states that images are to be provided for comparison purposes, we cannot bill both sides.
E.g. request is for x-ray right foot and referrer states x-ray left foot for comparison - we can only charge for right foot images even though left foot has also been scanned.
If a request does not specify that images are for comparison, e.g. referrer states x-ray both feet (and no mention of comparison), we can charge for both feet.
According to Medicare:
Comparison X-rays
Where it is necessary for one or more films of the opposite limb to be taken for comparison purposes, benefits are payable for radiographic examination and reporting of one limb only. Comparison views are considered to be part of the examination requested.
