Obstetric Ultrasound

Any pregnancy related ultrasounds have to be invoiced with the corresponding Medicare item numbers.  A pelvic ultrasound cannot be billed in a pregnancy related procedure instead of a pregnancy code. 

E.g. if a patient comes in for a dating ultrasound but there has been a foetal demise, the code for Medicare has to be 55700 which is a dating ultrasound.  A pelvic ultrasound code cannot be used in this instance because the ultrasound performed was pregnancy related.  This applies to all stages of pregnancy ultrasounds.
